Amit Mitra, the principal chief adviser to Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, wrote to Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to request a special meeting of the GST Council to discuss issues facing micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) under the indirect tax levy. In his letter, Mitra emphasised the difficulties small businesses have in complying with the goods and services tax (GST). Only one day before the GST Council meeting on Saturday, Mitra’s letter is published.
I implore you to convene a special, closed-door meeting of the GST Council to discuss the issue of extreme overregulation and the current situation of MSMEs, the author wrote in the letter.
